Launch of ‘The Birds Never Cease”
By Liam Merriman/ Eoin O’Meachair.
Wednesday 23rd September 2015
St.Patrick’s Gateway Centre
“….I first detected a spark between Liam and Eoin when I first heard them perform together. Since then that spark has become a flame….” Those were the words of Jackie Hayden, the respected Hotpress journalist while addressing the packed St.Patrick’s Gateway Centre, as he opened proceedings at the launch of Waterford folk artist Liam Merrimans’ new CD ‘The Birds Never Cease’.
Not so much a solo album as Liam is joined on this Nashville recorded opus by long time friend, Carlow native Eoin O’Meachair.
The evening began with a short documentary like video, which gave the audience an insight into what went into the recording and also the mindset of the two musicians. Produced by renowned Nashville producer Thomm Jutz, ( the new album features nine original songs, written by Liam and covers by artists such as Tom Paxton, Richard Thompson and Donovan.
One pleasing aspect of the evening was Liam’s explanation of how each came to be which, especially when it concerns folk music, is welcome. It adds weight to a song.
Eoin, for his part admitted that this album was the first time he had committed his voice to a recording “…it will either be historical or hysterical…” It was not hysterical.
Liam and Eoin, along with accomplished guitarist Paul Grant treated the audience to around half of the albums contents before sending them away, cds in hand to enjoy the music again and again.
I have known Liam for many years and have seen many times how much he immerses himself in his music. His passion for his craft is patently obvious and this new offering compounds that passion. Eoin’s passion is equally as obvious and between them they have created a solid collection of songs, which should serve to further their already strong standing in the folk/trad genre.
The album ‘The Birds Never Cease’ is now available on iTunes.
