Silverbacks – Just In The Band // Live Session

Dublin art-punks Silverbacks have impressed with latest single ‘Just In The Band’, produced by Girl Band’s Daniel Fox and released through their own PK Miami Records. Today, they reveal a live video for the track after Clash described it as “an incisive, intense, pulsating performance, reminiscent of everyone from Gang Of Four to Fugazi and The Fall.”

Irish art punks Silverbacks delve into themes of false idolatry and deeper connection in their latest track. Produced by Daniel Fox from fellow Dubliners Girl Band, ‘Just In The Band’ carries the same nagging unease as previous single ‘Dunkirk’ with taut drums and unrelenting bass underpinning seasick guitar arps and Daniel O’Kelly’s blunt commentary on the ‘problems down the back’. Feedback soaked and frazzled, it sees the band step further away from their indie roots and more into the groove – if the groove covered itself in petrol and dared you to light the match.

Silverbacks are a thrilling prospect, delivering their own louche take on NYC-indebted rock: slack enough for the tastemakers while also mining the gems of a pop vein, catching the ears of those with a taste for a good hook. Now a full-fledged five piece after graduating from the bedroom project of songwriting brothers Kilian and Daniel O’Kelly, they ply their trade with as much emphasis on the dry humour running through Daniel’s lyrics as the propulsive, triple guitar-led onslaught in their music.

Silverbacks // Dunkirk

Dublin art-punks Silverbacks stomped back into action in 2018 with the premiere at Paste of their new single produced by Girl Band’s Daniel Fox ‘Dunkirk’ through their own PK Miami Records. Today, the band have premiered the video for it at The 405 where they explained their inspirations further: “The band are keen to cite classic bands like Television and Sonic Youth, which are certainly present, but the modernity of the sound of ‘Dunkirk’ and its ideas brings to mind current genre titans like Protomartyr” say The 405.

“The video for ‘Dunkirk’ was created by Cameron Taylor, a childhood friend of the band’s brothers Kilian and Daniel O’Kelly, who has done all of Silverbacks’ artwork to date, and is “an important part of [their] direction.” His video for ‘Dunkirk’ delves into their shared past: “The last scene in the music video features a typically grey and flat Flanders landscape where the three of us grew up. The estates in which we lived were once battlefields in the First and Second World War which isn’t too far off the idea of a beach resort in Dunkirk.”Dunkirk cover art - Silverbacks low res.jpg

Underpinned by an insistent, nagging bassline and creepy crawly guitar lines, it provides the ideal vehicle for frontman Daniel O’Kelly’s stream of consciousness ramblings about martial strife, the perfect sandcastle and spotting a con artist when he sees one. Produced by Girl Band’s Daniel Fox, the track lurches forth, pressure building from the undulating backbeat and layers of skronking guitars accenting Daniel’s increasingly frazzled yelps before finally collapsing into a sugar sweet coda. Indie kids no more, Silverbacks mean business and ‘Dunkirk’ is a powerful first move. The single is accompanied by a brilliantly creative video from Belgian graphic designer and artist Cameron Francis Taylor.

Last year’s ‘Sink The Fat Moon’ EP had the band lighting up their homeland, with nods from BBC’s Across The Line, RTE, The Irish Times, The Thin Air and Nialler9 amongst others. They followed up with riotous single ‘Just for a Better View’ before the end of the year, drawing more accolades and setting themselves up for an exciting 2018.
